When it comes to shipping the temperature-controlled cargo, every detail matters. We understand the importance of keeping these cargoes fresh or frozen: the temperature, atmosphere, humidity, ventilation, all specific condition in the container must be carefully adapted for the entire voyage, from the moment it is loaded until it’s finally delivered.
Chilled cargo refers to commodities which need to be shipped above product freezing temperatures. These cargoes are carried at the temperature between +20°C to -2°C. Some chilled cargoes are more temperature-sensitive with relatively short shelf lives and require extra attention during transportation.
Types of chilled cargo include:
Fresh fruit and vegetables
Fresh meats, poultry and seafood
Dairy products and eggs
Fresh juices and beverage
Confectionery products
Live plants and cut flowers
Frozen cargo refers to commodities or foodstuffs which need to be shipped and stored around -20°C, the optimum temperature for protection against spoilage and reduce the growth of bacteria. To maintain quality, texture and flavor, certain commodities need to be transported at temperatures -20°C or even lower.
Types of chilled cargo include:
Frozen meats, poultry and seafood
Frozen prepared foods
Frozen concentrates
These types of products are normally high-valued and extremely sensitive to temperature changes. Chemical reactions can occur if temperatures are not kept within a prescribed range, therefore the highest level of care must be treated with these cargoes. It is important to strictly adhere to the special handling instructions regarding the packaging, stowage, temperature and humidity management for these cargoes.
Types of chilled cargo include:
Pharmaceutical products
Chemical and biological products
Drinks and liquids
Tobacco products
Photographic materials
Reefer Container
A Reefer Container is a specialized container designed to transport temperature-sensitive goods in the most ideal cold condition. The unit is equipped with an electrical generator for the purpose of cooling or heating the air within the container, thus offers a reliable solution to any specific individual requirement of temperature and humidity. Reefer containers makes refrigerated cargo transport much easier and safer.
We have the ability to offer wide range of modern reefer equipment that inside temperature can be set from -40°C to + 30°C, as well as different transport modes of cold treatment(CT), controlled atmosphere (CA), fresh air ventilation and dehumidification settings. Our experts can advise you on the best option for your cargo, depending on the type and volume of goods you are shipping.
Components of a reefer refrigeration system

Keeping refrigerated cargo fresh and frozen depends not only on the temperature inside the container, but also humidity control and fresh air circulation. Here are the key indicators for the setting of rigorous cool condition:
Cold Treatment (CT): temperature control from -40°C to +30°C to preserve the freshness and quality
Controlled Atmosphere (CA): maintains balanced O2 & CO2 levels to extend product shelf life.
Fresh Air Ventilation: provides up to 285 CMH fresh air, removing ethylene and other volatiles.
Humidity Control: lowers the humidity from 95% to 60% to prevent rotting and fungal development
Live Monitoring: Real-time tracking the internal temperature, humidity, atmosphere, etc.

Chilled Cargoes
Fruits & Vegetables - crucial to control the appropriate temperature, humidity, oxygen, carbon dioxide and ethylene levels to maintain the freshness and quality.
Dairy product - like cheese, milk, yogurt, ice cream are extremely temperature-sensitive, need to be transported in well controlled environments.
Beverages - many beverages, like beer, wine, and milk require cold storage.
Flowers & Plants - flowers and plants need a controlled environment with specific temperature and humidity settings. Safe transport and prevention from withering is the essential condition.
Chemicals - Various types of alcohols, esters, ketones and acids require near-freezing temperatures for safe transit.
Industrial products - industrial films, photographic materials are highly temperature-sensitive, requires consistent control of temperature condition throughout the transport.
Chilled cargo is highly perishable and can gradually ripen during shipment. It is crucial to pre-cool your goods before loading them into reefer container. This will reduce the impact of outside temperatures while they are on the move. Here are three key factors impact the temperature of products during transportation:
Outside temperatures entering the container during loading and unloading
The temperature of the product itself prior to loading
Ventilation inside the container
Frozen Cargoes
The foodstuffs like frozen meat, fish, seafood, IQF vegetables require near-cryogenic temperatures to remain fresh. When transporting frozen products, make sure that cargoes inside the container form a solid block without spaces between boxes and the walls of the unit. This allows air to freely circulate evenly around the load maintaining a steady temperature for your goods. Here are four key factors:
The cargo must be pre-frozen to the correct temperature.
Maximum load height should never exceed the red load line of the container.
Ventilation of the container must always remain closed and humidity off.
Packaging must be able to resist moisture and allow for a vertical flow through boxes to maintain the correct temperature.
Pharmaceuticals Transport
Ensuring optimal condition of pharmaceutical products is crucial since the products themselves are highly sensitive in terms of time and quality assurance.Transportation of pharmaceuticals requires either standard (+15 to +25°c) or sensitive (+2 to +8°c) as well as frozen temperature conditions.
Reefer container with the latest technology ensures consistent management of strictest conditions throughout transportation. The modern systems ensure pharmaceutical products are kept at the optimal cold treatment and dehumidification with minimum damage or degradation. Depending on the sensitivity and cargo value, we will work with you to customize the solution with regards to e.g. additional care, specific reefer equipment (e.g. for blood plasma) and power off times.
Nowadays all main shipping lines are certified with GDP* standard, the highest standard in the industry, which requires reinforced security procedures to ensure pre-trip inspections (PTI), precise temperature control, monitoring and recording of the traceability, seal management and risk management approach are all strictly implemented within the required tolerance ranges during transportation.
*Good Distribution Practice: quality standard recommended by the European Commission guaranteeing the quality and integrity of pharmaceutical products throughout transportation.
At Prestige, we commit to following GDP compliant practices and providing reliable, secured, cost-effective deliveries for your pharmaceutical products. Our reefer specialists will assist you from the time you place a booking until the cargo is delivered to the final destination. — Count on us for Pharmaceuticals Transport.
We understand that the ability of cold storage and timely distribution of perishable and temperature sensitive goods, both at the port and beyond, is crucial for your supply chain. That’s why we continue to invest in flexible and innovative cold warehouses and distribution fleet.

Our professional cold warehouses are equipped with state-of-the-art cold storage facilities and controlling technologies, catering for temperature ranges from deep frozen goods all the way to chilled and temperature controlled atmospheres.
Deep frozen meat and seafood -30° C to -18° C (-22° F to -0.4° F)
Frozen meat and seafood -18° C to 0° C (-0.4° F to 32° F)
Pharmaceuticals 2° C to 8° C (36° F to 46° F) or 15°C to 25°C(59°F to 77°F)
Chilled fruits, vegetables, dairy products 7° C to 14° C (44.6° F to 57.2° F)
Ambient fresh produce etc. 14° C to 24° C (57.2° F to 75.2° F)
Transporting perishable goods from cold warehouse to distributors and retailers constitutes another important part of cold chain. Refrigerated truck fleet equipped with latest temperature control systems ensures that cargo is kept at an optimal temperature environment during the delivery, and avoids the temperature fluctuations during storage and transport
An important element of the cold chain is real-time monitoring. We can achieve end-to-end visibility in our cold chain operations about temperature, humidity and location tracking, to make sure your cargo is effectively monitored, and be prepared to deal with any disruptions and emergencies.
Importing perishable goods from abroad means the necessary quarantine inspection and customs clearance need to complete. Any delays can lead to possible degradation and you need to consider the extra time it takes for goods to go through the process.
A qualified and well-trained broker is key to ensure smooth and efficient operations. We have long-term broker partners with up-to-date knowledge of all kinds of refrigerated cargoes and proper compliance can be ensured for an efficient process to avoid any delays or issues during the clearance process.
